Course Outcomes
Participants will gain the skills and knowledge to:
- Understand Queensland firearms legislation, licensing requirements, and legal responsibilities
- Safely handle, load, unload, and operate firearms across applicable categories
- Identify firearm components, mechanisms, and safe operation principles
- Apply safe storage, transport, and maintenance practices
- Demonstrate safe range conduct, live-fire procedures, and shooting fundamentals
- Identify and respond to firearm malfunctions
- Apply lawful, ethical, and safety-focused behaviour when using firearms
Course completion meets QPS competency requirements for licence applications.
Entry Requirements
There are no academic entry requirements; however, participants must:
- Be at least 11 years old (with guardian consent), noting that licensing eligibility begins at 18 years
- Provide valid photo identification
- Meet Queensland Police Service (QPS) eligibility requirements for licensing
- Be able to safely handle firearms under supervision
Additional requirements may apply for Category H training (security or occupational use).
Units of Competency
This course includes the nationally recognised qualification:
- 11029NAT – Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety
Training is delivered for the following licence categories:
- Category A
- Category B
- Category H
Learners may complete one or multiple categories depending on licensing goals.
Delivery Options
- Duration: 1 day per firearm category
- Format: Classroom theory, practical handling, and supervised live-fire range assessment
- Location: Defensive Solutions Australia and Asset College approved training and range facilities across Queensland
All practical components are delivered under strict safety supervision by qualified firearms instructors.
Future Training Options
Successful completion provides eligibility for Queensland Firearms Licence application and supports progression into advanced security and firearms programs, including:
- CPPSEC3114 – Control Security Risk Situations Using Firearms
- Firearms and Defensive Tactics Programs
- CPP31318 – Certificate III in Security Operations
It forms a professional foundation for armed security roles and further tactical development.
Course Fees
- Categories A, B & H: $300
- Categories A & B only: $250
Fees include all classroom training, range access, ammunition, assessment, and certification.
Licensing Requirements
This course is approved by Weapons Licensing Queensland as meeting the mandatory training competency for a Queensland Firearms Licence application.
Participants must still complete:
- QPS online application
- Genuine reason documentation
- Background checks and licensing processes
Certification does not guarantee licence approval but fulfills the recognised competency requirement.

This qualification is accepted by Weapons Licensing Queensland for firearm licence applications across approved categories.
